Sundance 2010 Top 5 Picks

Out of the 12 I saw while bopping around here are 5 I want to brain dump about...

1) Abel

Diego Luna is just cute as a button.

Actors, producers and some key crew members. The entire flick was shot on location in Augascalientes, Mexico

The two boys that starred in the pic were selected from a pool of more than 400 local kids called to open casting. Later 20 kids, clearly boys brothers above participated in a theater training on set-ish drawn out audition where eventually Diego choose Christopher (far left) for lead role Abel and the decision was rewarded. Christopher has a younger brother (smalled boy pictured) to whom the role of Abel's younger brother was a perfect fit for. Both did magnificent and showed dynamic presences.

He was just really darn grateful and genuinely happy for it all to be coming together and the eve to be over. Luna commented that the editing period was the most challenging time as a director. This premier screening was many of the actors first time seeing any footage, as most films here are to their cast and crew, so its always a surprise how it pans out. I thought the film was touching, hilarious and kind hearted to the tender divisions that define Mexican working class families. Spoiler Alert: Role playing took over the young boys (Abel) fancy when he returns back to his single mother and two siblings after being in a children's mental hospital. This story allowed for exploration and generous growth of a young new actor at ripe age of "10 year."

INTERLUDE: If you know if anyone bought Exit Through The Gift Shop please just holler at me, I'm dying to see it or make a move to get my grubby hands on it. Fairy if you only knew how much D and I love thee, Banksy shows up not unbeknownst to me. Damn I didn't catch u on film, but stoked presences B to D remotely passed in spaces whee. Caught on film:

That's Banksy b! Main St. Park City, UT.

2) The Runaways

See previous post and video link, this one's got hype. At some point this will pop up on Demand soon. Continue to preserve and thank the universe Jon was present.

Joan Jette, Sherrie Currie, Floria Sigsimondi, Dakota Fanning, Kristen Stuart all just talking below. Leggy ladies-owe!

The main game. I was hoping that Kenny Laguna would be on stage, but the only male was Michael Shannon who totally nailed the nasty Kim Fowley. Got my peepers peeled to spot his Fowleyness in the flesh on the strip sporting his green mop top.

So this pic above captures the silly slogans on screens. Note: This is the recharged fight against the establishment. What does this mean? Swags been reduced to total shove it down your throat tosses for b-list celebs. Thank god I don't know any of 'em nor need any of tossings. The only swag will be pop-chips, tee-shirts, drinks on the WGA West and anti-hand bacterial accepted by me. I was more interested in the movies and shaking hands.

3) Blue Valentine

Directed by Derek Cinefrance who started this project was 12 years in the making. So its no longer boo-hoo, its getting huge acclaim. I still can not see why. Sure both Michelle and Ryan are attractive folks and do it soft core porn style on screen but its still 120 minutes of sheer love hell and confusing story telling due to average production design, make-up and costume. After walking out I know why I never bother with relationships- like the film they get exaughsting.

For all you that want a look.

4) Cyrus

So really sweet dudes these Duplass Bros. They know what they are doing and have a fantastic way to tell a story. Noticing enlances, uhh whats that word in English....uhhhh, connecting themes between their recent flicks, Cyrus, included deals with typically ignored common family dysfunctionalities. Hats off to Jonah Hill bringing it all together with comic relief and just saying it like it would be read and calling out Twitter shits while enjoying the festival. He is him on and off screen and I was chuckling at every corner when it was the same silly crank pulled on screen. How old is he? Am I color blind? Go and see Cryus you'll enjoy the dramedy and coming attractions from Jay and Mark Duplass.

Other brothers:
O'Connels
Cohen
Huges
Wright

5) Get Low

Aaron Schneidar's directorial debut with a stacked cast, 6th from seated left Billy Murray, Robert Devall, Sissy Spacek new comers et al. Fantastic tale penned loosely around a true story of depression era recluse that calls for a funeral while he is still alive to set things straight. Real life man drew 10,000 people in Virgina hills. Go, this is a must see. I fell for it, loss and living, loving and leaving.
